Avicenna Mausoleum

The Avicenna Mausoleum in Hamadan, Iran, was built in 1952, on the site of the tomb of Avicenna (d. 1037). There had been an older building marking his tomb, destroyed in 1950 to make way for the project.
The mausolem was the first state commission given to Hooshang Seyhoun.
It is surmounted by a spindle-shaped tower, inspired by the Ziyarid-era tomb tower of Gonbad-e Kavus.〔''Thresholds'' 24, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2002,
(p. 49 ).〕
Next to the mausoleum is a library, a small museum, and a monumental marble statue.
The Pahlavi government had plans to build such a mausoleum since at least 1939. They were eventually realized to mark the millennium of Avicenna's birth (traditionally AH 370; AH 1370 corresponding to AD 1950/1).
The mausoleum was dedicated in May 1954 in a grand ceremony, and the avenue running in front of it renamed in honour of Avicenna.〔Jay M. Rasooli, Cady Hews Allen, ''The Life Story of Dr. Sa'eed of Iran'', William Carey Library, 1983, ( 161f. )〕
As the monument was a central element of the Pahlavi's government's propagation of Iranian nationalism, and it was consequently in danger of being defaced.
But as Khomeini himself was an admirer of Avicenna, Buali Sina Square was not renamed after the Revolution, and Buali Sina Street connects it to the central Imam Khomeini Square roundabout to the north. 〔''Thresholds'' 24, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2002, p. 48. "At the core of the Pahlavi 'pride,' around which the imagined Iranian nation was exulted before the Revolution, the tomb complex came under the risk of state vandalism between 1978 and 1980."〕
